Those deeply disturbing symptoms were so regular, that did not allow me to walk much, not to mention do any kind of sports. After visiting several doctors, doing many medical checks, no doctor could have found the reason for those spasms. Thus, I had to deal with them on my own and find my own way to heal. After experimenting and self-researching, I figured it was something connected to my gullet and stomach, hence my GERD illness (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Reflecting on that experience, frustrated for not being able to understand what exactly caused them and why they stopped, I see them now as glitches. I was trying out different ways to visualise them, to explain them - to myself, to the doctors. If the law says so, the law must be changed. The thought of this gets my blood boil. The way we react to something like this shows us in what kind of society we are living. The way the institutions that are responsible to find ways to prevent such acts to happen in the future react shows us what kind of future awaits us. When I drew the first piece (Clouds in the head), I didn’t imagine I would do the next two. I was having a difficult time and felt anxiety at that time and wanted to depict the feeling. Whilst digging into my condition, I realised that the cough I was having during the last 2 years might be caused by my anxieties. This is what the second illustration shows - it also depicts the second phase in my condition - the feeling of heaviness in the chest and coughing. Finally, I hit the bottom with strong pain in the chest that made breathing difficultly. This tightening was torturing me for a week, making me unable to do anything normally - every movement of the body was making the pain stronger and more difficult to breathe. That was a scary warning that I should take better care of myself. Difficult times for all of us, in different ways. Some are on the front line fighting for other people’s lives. I got flu a week before the whole lockdown. I am one week more in isolation and locked in a foreign city, in a country I don’t know, with official language I can’t speak, with my friends and family far away, thankfully together and alone with my loved one. I would love to draw more but I am also demotivated, totally feeling like living in limbo. Here are a few illustrations since the beginning of my quarantine. Artworks ✪ “Things we used to love doing: Draught and safe” - The psychological aftermath of coronavirus crisis is unpredictable. I often see people asking “When the quarantine is over, what would you first do?” and the answer is something like “I will go to my favourite restaurant… or bar… or cafe; or I will hug this or that person”. Then, I think for myself. Pfff, I miss cafes, restaurants, bars and people, of course. But then… wow, as soon as the quarantine is over, I think it will be too soon. I will just wait a bit and see. If I can really go to that bar, cafe, restaurant… and feel safe. Kind of. If the numbers will go down and the curve will slide to the ground. I will feel weird, insecure, slow to go back to enjoy such a pint of draught beer. That I love so much! ✪ “Social distance? Let’s fix the terminology” - I really believe we need to call it physical distance because social connection right now is vital ✪ “Corona” - impersonating the virus (this was my first visual reaction to the lockdown) ✪ “OK” - stay at home. ✪ “Limbo” - living in a limbo: limbo - noun (UNCERTAINTY) [ U ] an uncertain situation that you cannot control and in which there is no progress or improvement. - Cambridge dictionary ✪ “Why wearing a mask is a norm now” - Especially after medical professionals confirm it is not needed when you are healthy. I really felt quite strongly that moment, knowing that what comes next will not be what I hoped for a year earlier when thinking of the last and probably most “epic” season of the hit show. I was working on my annual art history paper that was a research about compositions and typology of the portrait in Florence in 15th Century. I took tons of photos but I am now excited about the colours of those super different lands: I am picking a little colour palette of several favourite places and will turn them into a world of my creation. First on the left: This is my first: the place where Björk doesn’t live, an Icelandic church just next to Reykjavik. These are the colours of that moment and place and the new setting. The one day with blue sky in Iceland we had. The white night. The water everywhere. The crazy mountains that are no mountains but some weird fusion of ex-shore, rock and lava after-math. Yup. That’s what I came up with. In the middle: Here we go again with Iceland… It seems I am addicted, but I really wanted to make this one: it is a fusion of the colours of my favourite spot there so far (the Black beach) and one of the symbols of Reykjavik - Hallgrímskirkja (that very odd church that you can see from anywhere and helps you navigate without Google maps). I placed that expressionist architectural creature into another fictional world, taking only the colours from the photo from the Black beach. Why so? Maybe you didn’t know, but if you give a closer look to the church, you will see that the top is designed the same way as the famous tectonic square rocks that are on the Black beach. That is one of the connections… Another one is… my imagination. On the right: My second world was inspired by a little place called Collonges-la-Rouge, located in Corrèze, France. It is famous with the red stone that is used on everything: buildings, roads… I saw it in Spring, so in Spring is the very red Universe I created with its colours. Oh, yeah, in Spring we trust!
