Sound Jams: Methods of Collective Sound-Based Publication-Making for Practitioners from Various Backgrounds
Sound Jams is my Master's thesis, written in April 2023 at the Piet Zwart Institute (Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam), as part of my MA in Fine Art & Design: Experimental Publishing. It's the research I'm probably most proud of, and I'm making it available here as a digital download, because I think it belongs in the hands of people who could actually use it.
What is it about?
Sound is everywhere, but for most people, actually making it feels like someone else's territory. Reserved for musicians, sound artists, and people with the right training. This thesis is about dismantling that idea.
Sound Jams explores how to facilitate collective sound-making and publishing experiences for groups of people from any background (no musical training required). I designed and ran five different sound jams in Rotterdam, observed what worked, what didn't, and distilled it all into a set of core principles for creating inclusive, accessible spaces for group sound-making.
It draws on the work of Pauline Oliveros (deep listening), Cornelius Cardew and the Scratch Orchestra, the Fluxus movement, and others. It also grounds all of it in real, documented practice.
